Introduction to Flexibility – Definition and Benefits

Flexibility is the ability to move joints and muscles through their full range of motion. Flexibility in the joints and muscles will increase by implementing a constant stretching routine. It is necessary to follow a set routine after warming up properly and before beginning a workout. It is also important to follow a stretching program at the completion of a workout to re-stretch and reduce the risk of injury through muscle pulls and strains. The athlete that works consistently on improving their flexibility will most likely see the benefit of improved speed, strength, agility, and as a result, improved athletic performance.

Benefits of Stretching:

-         warms deep muscle fibers

-         warms joint fluids, lubricants, and synovial fluids

-         increases respiratory rate

-         elevates heart rate  and therefore increases volume of blood flow

-         it also decreases the chances and/or severity of injury

-         prepares the athlete mentally for the upcoming activity

-         helps decrease joint inflexibility and pain after an athletic career.
